What Happens During a Professional Oven Clean?

If you’ve never had your oven professionally cleaned before, you might be wondering what it actually involves. Here’s exactly what happens when we arrive at your home.

Setting up

The first thing we do is get everything out of the van and set up properly. A large rubber-backed mat goes down in front of the oven to protect your floor — we want to leave your kitchen in at least as good a condition as we found it.

Before we start, we have a quick visual check inside the oven to see what we’re dealing with. Every oven is different, and this helps us plan the clean properly.

Removing everything that comes out

We remove everything that can come out — racks, shelves, trays, the fan cover, and anything else that’s removable inside the oven. The oven door also comes off. We split the glass panels so we can clean properly between them, and clean the inside of the door thoroughly before reassembling it and setting it aside.

All the removable parts go straight into the dip tank in the van, where they soak while we work on the oven itself.

Heating up the oven

Before we start cleaning the oven interior, we turn it on to around 80 degrees. This does two things — it confirms the oven is working correctly, and it softens the grease and baked-on residue, which makes it significantly easier to remove.

Once it’s had a chance to warm through we turn it off at the mains and let it cool to a safe working temperature before we start.

Cleaning the interior

With the oven off and at a safe temperature, we start on the interior. A scraper deals with the heavy, caked-on residue first — getting the worst of it off before we move to cleaning. We then work through the interior with a professional cleaning paste and a metal scourer, scrubbing and rinsing repeatedly until it’s clean. It’s a case of scrub, rinse, check, and repeat until the result is right.

We don’t leave until it’s actually clean — not just better than it was.

The dip tank

While we’re working on the interior, the racks, shelves and trays are soaking in the heated dip tank in the van. This breaks down the grease and baked-on residue far more effectively than scrubbing alone. Once they’re done, we bring everything back in, rinse it thoroughly in the sink, and check nothing has been missed. If anything needs a bit more attention it gets it before we reassemble.

Finishing up

Once everything is clean and dry, we reassemble the oven — racks, fan cover, and door all go back in. We turn it on to check everything is working as it should, which it always is. Finally we clean the outside of the oven, including any knobs or controls that need attention.

Then the mat comes up, everything goes back in the van, and the job is done.

How long does it take?

A standard single oven usually takes around one and a half hours a double oven can take up to two and a half hours. Double ovens take a little longer. We’ll always give you an honest estimate when we book the job.
